I go to IRS.gov. I click on File. Then "individuals". Then "sign in or set up your account". It takes me to another screen. I click on "sign in or create account". That takes me to yet another screen where there are two choices: (1) "sign in with an existing ID.me account" or (2) "create a new ID.me account". The choices are really non-choices. Either way if you want to open an individual account with the IRS, then you've GOT to choose to go the ID.me route.
DON'T DO IT!!!
Then the fun began. It took me HOURS to get through all of the instructions.
Then ID.me proceeds to screw up my Chromebook. LOTS OF MORE HOURS with robot help that sends you into endless do-loops.
ID.me is like nesting Russian dolls. Ten combination safes--each locked inside another locked combination safe.
Take it from me. You DON'T want an ID.me account.
